OOPS; CHRISTMAS TWICE IN 1969 - - A LITTLE TECHNOLOGY

I did not realize it was possible to have the same Christmas, twice in the same year, but I did in 1969. Conflicts with my last post, huh?

An afternoon stop at the officers club for lunch and then I planned to return to flight operations. No scheduled flights but I usually hung out in Flight Ops during the day. Helicopters coming and going, always seemed to be activity worthy of watching.

A fellow at the officer's club asked me if I knew about the “Immediate Out” the Army was offering to pilots/officers with over 20 months in country. I thought he was joking and passed it off. He said he was serious. “Any pilot with over 20 months in Vietnam is eligible for an 'Immediate Out'.”

I pushed my lunch aside and walked directly to the Personnel Office and asked if what I had just heard was true. They said it was; said I was eligible and when did I want to go. I replied, “yesterday.” I signed the necessary paper work and was told to report back later that afternoon for orders home and paperwork for completion of my military service .

I walked over to flight operations and erased my name off of the flight schedule board. That was a defining moment when it all ended. No more combat flying, no more Army helicopter flying and just a few days left serving my duty to my country.

LOACH  Light Observation Army Combat Helicopter

A hot shot young pilot put me in the back seat of his “LOACH” and flew me to the airfield to catch my “Caribou” to Tan Sun Nhut. The young kid laughed the whole way to the little airfield, flying as low as he possibly could, trying to scare the hell out of me. Good kid!! He landed, we saluted and shook hands. He pulled pitch as I walked away as he picked up the low level route back to home base. In the blink of an eye, a moment in life etched in my permanent memory. It still puts a smile on my face.

I was on a plane the next morning to catch a flight home. All that happened a few days before Christmas, 1969.

We landed in Hawaii on Christmas Day to refuel and landed at McChord AFB, Christmas Eve. Time change and all. “I'll be home for Christmas" by Bing Crosby played inside the plane as we descended over the western shore of Washington State. Never ever has that song meant so much as it did at that moment. To see the shores of my native state pass under us, the past four years of duty and Christmas Eve all wrapped in one whole moment, was a full heart.

To see my folks on Christmas Day, 1969 was a most wonderful present for all of us. There must have been a noticeable “whooshing sound” of relief from our home that day.

CELL PHONE

Never say never. An old saying because quite often one finds him/herself in the never. Big nevers or small nevers! Regardless, never has arrived for me and cell phones.

My only real need for a cell phone is to call five people or so and only from time to time. My cell phone spends most of its life perched on an up-side down jar in a south facing window. We have a metal roof which kills cell phone reception in our house, especially in an area where our cell phone reception outside is the smallest bar at best.

I do take a photo from time to time and mail it to myself. What else do I need? What else do I want? I want the Iphone 7 plus high end, super duper world connectivity, virtual reality, voice command to know 'what the fox' says experience. I want that $900 dollar experience for under $150. Of course, you know it is not the same experience, but a good stepping stone and improvement on my current cell phone.

There came a point quickly in my wanting to learn of this where terminology escaped me and I knew not even the questions to ask. Much like trying to ask a question to a HAM operator about HAM radio. Never ever got an answer I understood, no matter how simple I thought the question was.

I waded through a few folks asking questions on smart phones. I did want a bigger machine than the little one I had before. But rarely these days does one stumble on "the person" to answer questions, one that knows the subject matter and more importantly, one that is interested in working with customers, people, other people; but a person who is able and willing to engage.

And then, out of the blue I found him. A young geek. Answered my questions, gave good suggestions and explained why phone A over phone B for a similar price.  And yes, it does this and does that and you can shut that off if you do not want it, but you and I both know that a cell phone is never shut off. Too think other wise is to be further down the technological ladder than I am on and there are no rungs below the rung I stand on.

So  I hooked  it up. OK!!! had it hooked up, turned on and set off on my own. New cell phone with no numbers in it and could not answer a call. Did not understand the press button and swipe right. Good size and wonderful touch screen. Swiping left, right, up and down and things happen; or, not.

But with a little help from my son and other knowledgeable friends, I am up and running.  Voice commands. This is fun and scary at the same time. It is easier for me now to see how lost one can get in all of this.  There appears to be no limit to information gathering and use.

I now know "what the fox" says and how to text, call, navigate using voice commands. Yea!? Well, we will see.

THE MORNING HOUR

We are up at 04:30 this morning and the first cup of coffee already gone. The first cup is the best, because it is poured when there is just enough brewed to be a full cup. Thus, it is the strongest. In The After, I must have my coffee. What ever it takes, got to have the morning coffee. I would put in 55 gallon drums of coffee beans and ground coffee if I thought it would keep.

The dog appears needy this morning, but apparently just needed to go outside to do her business. Minus temperatures coming later this week. She always wants go investigate outside on these ugly, cold mornings instead of just doing her business. And the cat has the coming in house down pat now. No lolly gagging. She zooms in and paces. We give her fresh chicken bites to which she turns up her nose. Fresh medium pieces of steak tip last night before the lot turned into Beef Stroganoff. Again not good enough. Cream in a kitty cup. Nope!! Asking the cell phone "what does the cat want?"

The local TV news this morning is full of heroes and victims. None of which are heroes or victims. But a good story is always made. The outside reporter stands in some nondescript place talking important nonsense. "Back to you, Ned!"

The weather men cannot or will not/never give the weather report. A weather map shown on the background green screen and the full report is pushed back to the end of half hour and hour news period. And then the weathermen and weather women are non specific. Almost fearful of a forecasted weather statement. At the end of the first teaser is another "stay tuned, too early to tell" and eventually the whole report runs the gamete of sun, clouds, moisture, some accumulation here and there, general temperatures complete with driving and winter dressing lessons. Or "the public is warned not to try to push a Moose while on foot."

Gonna try asking my cell phone what the weather will be today. My bet is Jane will give me the weather report in one complete sentence. I named the woman in my phone Jane.

CHRISTMAS ONLY COMES ONCE A YEAR

First Season Snow Fall Looking Down the Hill

And for this I am happy, Christmas coming once a year. Not from a “bah humbug” Christmas perspective, but from the “too many cookies, other related snacks and overly rich meals” perspective. I could say "NO", but how does that work?

For several days now, I find myself sitting at the kitchen table visiting and watching her make cookies. Tray after tray comes out, set in front of me and counted. Yep, her is counting cookies and naming names. I spent a good part of yesterday, like the dog, waiting for a falling Russian Tea Cake or computing how to steal one. But they are lined up like soldiers and all in pre-mission status. The last thing I want is to be caught stealing already spoken-for cookies. But at 4 pm yesterday, most were prepackaged and there were 8 left over. I know there were eight because I counted them. By 5 pm there were none and I had powdered sugar all over the front of me. I have yet to eat a RTC without wearing it.

Now this morning we are clearing the decks for 150 CC cookies, give or take. I like mine on the crispy side and her likes them chewy. A team cooking effort as the morning progresses. Our plan is to complete the annual CC cookie baking season in one day. We have never done this before and by all accounts, are a week and a half early with this whole process.

First snow this morning. Barely day break now and it is white outside. I love these first snow days. First dog prints when she goes out to do her business. The local weather people are acting out like this is a most unique event, some schools are closing and somewhere someone just drove off the highway, white dust settling, headlights aimed into the forest and a 911 call. “It has all happened before....” But I so love the first snow fall. If you come here weekly, you will also hear how tired I am of the snow. But that is a month away. Right now, it is 4th cup of coffee, a Russian Tea Cake, powdered sugar on the keyboard and a perfect morning fire.

The two steep slopes of the driveway were sanded this past weekend, utility trailer set up on blocks and several other items outside covered with small tarps. That was it for this past season. Now the snow will own all of this for a few months. This morning is my official recognition of winter setting in. The tractor with snow blower attached, will run the driveway for the first time this season when this first falling of snow ends.

Top photo shows three animals prints, two adults and one youngster. Look to the far right, next to the snow edge for the other set of adult prints.  Also shown here in bottom photo.

Had I looked out the office window earlier,  just at the right time, I would have seen this family of three, moving up the driveway towards the back woods. I think the prints are cat prints, wife thinks fox maybe. Regardless, good size animals.

It is during winter months when I get see how many animals come and go here on a nightly basis. Often there are driveway animal crossing prints near the bottom of the driveway. Daily animal routes traveled  through our area.

OYSTERS

I will finish here, talking of food stuffs for this blog.

We find oysters from the Pacific North West at one of our major outlets here in middle New England. From South Bend, Washington State. I know the area well. Raised and lived near there for 50 years. Also a big fan of seafood from the Pacific North West.

The oysters are shipped here as fresh as possible and that is noticeable from the eating. Fresh oysters taste noticeably better than older oysters. We purchased 12 pints and plan to devour each and every one before mid-December. Grandparents and parents taught me to parboil oysters for a few minutes, drain and rinse in cold water and pat dry. This process firms up the oyster and prevents the Godawful milky/runny/gooey/yucky oyster experience.

Then egg, cracker meal of choosing and lightly fried to golden brown. I like the finished product with squeezed lemon and a quick dip in catsup. Like the annual cookies, the wife and I can mainline oysters till we have overdosed. Not a word is said at the dinner table, maybe a hand signal for passing the salt or sauce, but no normal conversation. We do make eye contact several times. The last two oysters are offered to each other and we split them. The dog watches the whole meal from her vantage point between our kitchen eating island chairs. The dog looks at her, the dog looks at me and nothing drops on the floor. The dog suffers through our oyster dinners. A couple more dinner meals are in the offering with one small batch of oyster stew near the end. It is what it is. Nothing more and for sure nothing less.

BAD SANTA

Mid-week and quick morning media story with chunky child explaining how Santa Claus 'fat shamed' him when Santa told the child he should lay off the burgers and fries. Mom was sitting right next to the child as he told the cameras how he could not sleep and how troubled he was that he was "fat shamed" by Santa Claus.

The back story we do not see, and I am guessing here, is how all of parts and pieces were put in place for this youngster to find a news outlet to sit down and tell his story. I do not want to put out any fake news here, but there had to be some organization and commenting to get this sit down interview set up and filmed. I am guessing mom had a hand in this because she is a mom. The little guy was a little chunky. And I think cameras make all of us look as if we are carrying a little more water than usual. The media inadvertently has added more weight to the little guy.

Apparently, Santa apologized and the story ends with the possibility that Santa will be let go. I fear there will be a follow-up story. Mom and son may even make the national news.

I should quit here, but cannot. What happens if Santa is fired and the little guy sees Santa again at the mall? Does he ask the question; “Why is Santa working at the mall and why did he get a job promotion?” If so, will mom lie to her son or will she decide the truth moment has come and have the Santa talk?

If mom and son are seriously worried about chunkiness, does mom suggest to son that more salads and fruit options will be added to snack stops? Will son agree? Will mom suggest?

Will there be an intervention in the family? Will those in government offices and “the better” friends show up for a needed family talk? Will paperwork need to be signed and diet sheets distributed to the family and a plan developed with bi-monthly meetings and reports filed?

Is the feeding of her son some how abusive?

See how this spirals out of control? All it will take is for one do-gooder to nudge this fat-shaming bolder downhill and it will have a life of its own.

They may have bitten off more than they can chew!

..................................................

The current President Elect, “The Donald” is making his own news on twitter by bypassing the media control of the minute by minute news cycle. The Donald tweets, controlling the news item release. The media can only react from there. They are all a -“twitter” about all things political and I bet they play second fiddle in days, weeks, months and years ahead.

Disbelief runs amuck and noise now for American's who disavow “The Donald” being their president just up and not pay their taxes in protest. I think this ranks right up there with Hollywood going to Mars or moving to another country in protest. Not even hot air anymore but rather lukewarm throws of “Fideling.”

Yea, I am enjoying this. In making the world great again, if cards are played right, foundations set properly and smart players playing smart, all of this could go on for the next 16 years. Eight of “The Donald” and eight of Pence.

...........................................................

We started with a little FOX news this morning and one of their first questions, to the watching audience, was "Should it be a crime to kill a cop?" It is very possible that meant to say "hate crime", but if that was the case, their initial query was never qualified as such. Even then the "stupidity light" automatically flashes over their heads. And to this, her and I tried to offer up some kind of common sense, thoughtful response to the TV. Yep, you do it, too, I bet; talk to the TV. And even here now, I want to write up the height of disconnectedness and lack of involvement in doing one's job to the best of one's ability and it all just becomes yadda yadda yadda.

My father on a snow machine winter of 1967. Amazing change in this technology over the last 50 years. Mom wrote on the back of this photo that Dad did not want to try riding it and was just happy getting his photo taken.

...........................................................................................

Woke up to four degrees this morning and five to eight inches of snow predicted tonight and tomorrow through the morning commute. Gonna be a normal winter mess with school closings and a few folks off the roads.

Have a great week.

BLOG-HINKEY-TRAFFIC-FALL OF ROME-COOKIES-MARS-SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY-GOT MONKEY

I have found writing this blog entertaining. I now sneak into the corners of my blog site, trying to learn how I can enhance the site w/o screwing it up so badly that I have to shut it down. I tread lightly and rely on asking questions of those who know more than I do. Time is on my side.

I have had hits from France, Russia, Germany, Poland, Israel, Brazil, South America, Spain, European Block Countries, South Africa with most hits from the USA and Alaska. To those of you who come here from around the world to read this blog, thank you. I have no idea how you came across this tiny blog island, but I appreciate it.
.......................................................

I will admit that we here on the hill in middle New England have breathed a sigh of relief after the elections. This country works best if we are governed from the middle. The pendulum has to swing to the right now for awhile to hopefully again settle in the middle. If folks can better work the give and take--win some lose some--sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you; we might just be able to work ourselves out of the many holes our society and politicians have dug. My money is not on that, though, for I fear that once the large boulder starts to roll down hill again, the momentum and speed eventually become more than man can stop. A lot of large trees are going to be knocked down at the bottom of the hill and the path left behind will be easily seen from passing orbs and fuzzy visiting space ships. Here on the ground will be forever changed. History has this well documented.

So, in my past days of some emotional and mental better-off feeling, I feel hinky that downturns are still coming. I look over my shoulder and feel these calmer moments are slippery
.............................................................

“In The After” raised its head here last week when I saw this tweet or FB post. I watched the traffic mess, days before Thanksgiving and could not but help to see this being a disaster in the making. Like ones and zeros, all that needs to happen is a one happening where a zero should be and the whole kit and kaboodle becomes another script for the media speakers of words.

Of all the places I never want to find myself in, this is a wonderful example. The secret is to get out early before this happens. In this case, just one day earlier would have been better. Taking the Thanksgiving week off and leaving days earlier would have been much better. And the coming home postponed a few days, too.

If I had no other options, I would at least be out practice-driving directions out of town that are not seen in this tweet video. Options, options and more options. Much better to be moving ninety degrees to interstate traffic and to know the route as well as the freeway. Bug out bags, full gas tank with extra fuel and what ever else is important to your and yours.

These concerns and viewpoints are by no means new. The visual of the traffic back-up, though, did paint a good picture of what a moment in time of panic and mass migration from the big cities will look like.
.............................................................

I realize the author is trying to sell us something here. Seems in many of these articles, the answer to all of our woes is just a credit card number away. That being said, the general thesis around similarities of Rome then and the USA now are worthy of reading. If we watch 50 cars drive off a cliff, we might conclude the rest of the vehicles traveling down the same road, same direction and circumstances might also end in the airborne experience.

If we can see this, then a little common sense would cause us to change a few things on the road to the cliff. A gentle U-turn, a road block and detour, signs of complete failure ahead if the driver does not make changes and so forth. But doing nothing and increasing the speed seems inadvisable.

My “hinky” feelings mentioned above surfaces again. I think it best to pull over now. Regardless, I found this a good read and worthy of time thinking how all of this might impact us. If it is too late to stop the faster moving traffic, it might not be too late for individual thinkers to pull off and head another direction.

OHIO STATE MASS SHOOTING NOVEMBER 28, 2016

And the word readers are all a flutter with gun violence and agenda. Oops, it was an SUV attack and the driver got out and started stabbing people on purpose. Yes, OMG, OMG on purpose!!! This is not an accidental SUV rundown and accidental stabbings.

Stay away from crowds, SUVs, quick moving knives and do not get on the government buses. Oh, put the cell phone in your pocket when you are out and about. Head up, ears and eyes alert and mind in the moment. When driving to and from, no cell phone, keep plenty of spacing around other vehicles and avoid being in the center lanes that offer no exiting options. Do some of these kinds of things and they will become habits in two weeks.

Hanging from spurs and safety harness-another day at the office

................................................................

ON THE HOME FRONT

Helped her put up a small Christmas tree on the down below gate post. We hung bangles and topped the little guy off with a gold bell. Garland was wrapped around the gate bar and a gold bell hung down from the middle of the gate. More bangles to be added to the tree and a wreath is a must to complete the gate bar. Her is in seventh heaven doing this. Like a little kid twisting, hanging, tying, stepping back to look and then coming forward with adjustments and additions.

Christmas cookies are in the queue now. Norwegian Fattigmand from my side of the family; Hermits and Russian Tea Cakes from her side of the family. We make a gazillion chocolate chip cookies and those are from SAM's in bulk dough form. Best damn cookies for the price and effort. Cannot eat just six.
Set out a half gallon of milk and I find a way to mainline a dozen at one setting. Rehab starts again in January.

CC cookies are given to local friends, family and heart people in our daily lives. Mechanic and crew get several dozen. Girls at the town office a dozen each. Post office folks who are always polite and helpful, a couple dozen. Our police department; respect, appreciation and saying thank you for your service. And others. We bake these up and stack em like cord wood on the kitchen table. The table is empty the week before Christmas.

Ten dozen cookies, minus a few, are done this morning. Her is a measuring and mixing as we speak.

Second Batch of Russian Tea Cakes

We started watching the National Geographic Channel Series entitled “MARS” three weeks ago. The first three episodes are still programmed ahead of the weekly Monday night schedules. I have the series recorded so as not to miss an episode. It looks easy to watch past episodes and get caught up.

A wonderful series for family to watch together. Could open doors of conversations worthy of time spent. Maybe a model rover for Christmas.

This is the ongoing web blog associated with the TV episodes. Fun to browse through, especially for kids to get hooked on good stuff like this and find their minds spun up on science, adventure and space travel. There are millions of worse things for kids to be watching so give this time and program gift a look see.

SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY

It is Wednesday morning and usually by mid week, the After Blog has taken shape. A few photos, exceptional commentary (just made myself laugh) and with days left to fine tune. But not this week.

Yesterday afternoon, I watched the barn cat in the garage watch a rather chunky squirrel saunter out from under the vehicle in the garage, pass in front of the her and continue out to the driveway. The cat sat and watched the squirrel leave. Her head swinging right to left with a final glance up at me. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

I looked at the cat dinner table and the dry food was down, the kitty cream was gone as was the nasty salmon meal she loves to eat. So is the cat sleeping with the enemy now? Was it a dinner date and the squirrel just leaving as I came into he garage? Of all the wonderful worldly things I am trying to get through the funnel this week, the cat behavior is puzzling. OR, was the cat so full that she did have the energy to chase the squirrel? Regardless, there is a squirrel in the wood pile!!
....................................................................

She got her monkey caught in her collar and was carrying it around like a little one in a pouch. Very cute. But the bag of chips I was opening trumped any of her monkey carrying concerns.

Have a very good week!!
